Sailing on Rehoboth
Bay

Rehoboth Bay is ideally suited to small boat sailing like not many other places on the East Coast. With consistent wind, little to no current and relatively shallow water, we enjoy an inherently safe sailing location. RBSA. is located on a clean sandy beach with only a ½ mile of land between us and the Atlantic Ocean, thus aiding in consistent thermal breeze development. At Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association we have enjoyed particularly beautiful sailing conditions since 1963.
If you are a novice sailor, Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association is the place for you. Our Sailing School has been in existence non-stop since RBSA was founded in 1963. In fact, teaching sailing was initially how the club came to be!
If racing is your thing, or even if you just want a concentrated way to improve your basic skills, RBSA. is definitely where you want to be! Both the RBSA Sunfish and Hobie Fleets host extensive club racing schedules. These fleets, along with the Lightning fleet host invitational regattas each year which attract sailors from up and down the east cost. The Catalina 25 and big boat fleet, while mainly cruising fleets, host several races each season. RBSA also has a proud tradition of hosting District, National and World events for fleets both in and out of RBSA. In 1998, we hosted the Sunfish Northeast Championships, the Hobie 16 North American Championships and the Albacore National Championships. In 1999, we hosted the Albacore National and World Championships. This year we will be hosting the Sunfish Mid-Atlantic Championships, the Volvo Leukemia Cup, and the Lightning East Coast Championships.
RBSA Fleets
Currently four sailing fleets call RBSA their home. Our oldest fleet, Lightning Fleet 325 hosts the Delaware State Governors Championships each year and the Dixie Districts most years. These events attract up to 20 Lightnings from the Mid-Atlantic region.
Sunfish Fleet 200 is one of two very
active racing fleets at RBSA. The fleet holds both Spring and Summer Series, 3
Cup events and the Annual Sunfish Whale Race, in which the minimum weight for the race is
200 pounds and includes a mandatory capsizing. The Cup events are open to all
Sunfish Sailors.
Hobie Fleet 106 is also an active
racing fleet. The fleet also hosts both Spring and Summer Series, 3 Cup events plus
several fun races. Each May, the Delaware State
Hobie Cat Championships attracts over 100 sailors from up and down the east coast.
RBSA's newest fleet is Catalina 25 Fleet 92. This fleet, along with the rest of the RBSA Big Boats are mainly a cruising fleet with several day cruises each month and a couple of overnight trips each season. The formal racing heats up once a year at the Granville Tubman Cup held each Labor Day.
